Starcraft was released on March 31, 1998. Two add-on campaigns officially licensed by Blizzard, "Starcraft: Insurrection" (July 31, 1998) and "Starcraft: Retribution" (1998) were released by Aztech New Media and WizardWorks Software. The first and only official expansion by Blizzard, "Starcraft: Broodwar", was initially released in the US on December 18, 1998. Followed by the PAL version releasing in March 1999 and the macOS version finally arriving on June 30, 1999.

On August 14, 2017 "Starcraft Remastered" was released on Battle.net. It features Starcraft and Starcraft: Broodwar with updated visuals, support for modern resolutions, modern Battle.net multiplayer, and offers unique HUD designs along with unique announcers for purchase. It also features a full visual overhaul using the designs by Carbot Animation for units and buildings.

Starcraft has seen many patches since it's release. Sometimes going many years with no new updates then a new patch arrives. The latest patch 1.23.10 was released on September 7, 2022. In 2019 the game was given 64 bit compatibility making sure it will continue to run on systems for the foreseeable future.
